The Playground Years: A Documentary Photo Series for Families

There is a season of parenting that happens almost entirely at the playground.

It’s the season of sticky hands, wind-blown hair, scraped knees, and the constant sound of “Watch me!”

It’s the season where your toddler insists on going down the slide one more time, where your preschooler swings so high it makes your heart skip, and where your big kid suddenly doesn’t need help climbing the ladder anymore.

It’s beautiful.

It’s chaotic.

And it goes by faster than anyone expects.

That’s exactly why I created The Playground Years.

What Are “The Playground Years”?

The Playground Years is an annual documentary photo series designed to capture families exactly as they are in this fleeting stage of childhood.

No stiff posing.

No elaborate setups.

No pressure to perform.

Just parents showing up and playing with their kids.

Instead of directing every moment, I focus on observing the real interactions that make up everyday family life:

  • A dad pushing a swing while his child laughs uncontrollably
  • A mom catching her toddler at the bottom of the slide
  • Snack breaks on the bench
  • Piggyback rides across the grass
  • Little hands reaching up for help climbing the ladder

These are the moments children actually remember.

And they deserve to be photographed.

Why Documentary Photography Matters

For years, family photography has focused on perfect smiles and perfectly coordinated outfits. While those portraits are beautiful, they don’t always tell the full story of family life.

Documentary photography captures something deeper.

It preserves:

  • Movement
  • Emotion
  • Connection
  • Personality
  • The way your child looks at you when they’re proud of themselves

When your children look back at these images someday, they won’t just see what everyone looked like.

They’ll remember how it felt to be there.

An Annual Tradition for Families

The Playground Years is designed to be more than a one-time session.

It’s an annual tradition.

Each spring, families return to the park to document another chapter in their story.

The toddler who needed help climbing last year might be racing across the monkey bars this year.

The baby in mom’s arms might be toddling toward the slide next spring.

Over time, these sessions become a visual timeline of your family growing together.

Each year is part of the story.

Why the Playground?

The playground is one of the most authentic places childhood unfolds.

It’s where confidence grows.

Where friendships begin.

Where independence slowly takes root.

But more than anything, the playground is where parents show up — pushing swings, cheering from the sidelines, helping with courage on the tall slide.

And one day, without anyone noticing exactly when it happened, those playground days quietly end.

That’s why documenting this stage matters so much.

What to Expect from a Playground Years Session

These sessions are simple, relaxed, and centered on play.

During your session you can expect:

• A short, documentary-style photography session at a local park

• Gentle guidance when needed, but mostly natural interaction

• Time for your family to explore, play, and simply be together

• A curated gallery of images that reflect the genuine moments of your family

There’s no need for elaborate planning.

Just bring your kids, wear something comfortable, and spend time together the way you normally would.

Because This Season Won’t Last Forever

Childhood is made up of phases that seem endless while you’re in them — until suddenly they aren’t.

One day your child will stop asking you to push them on the swings.

One day they’ll run ahead toward the slide without looking back to see if you’re watching.

The Playground Years are short, but they are full of the kind of moments that shape childhood memories.

This series exists to help families hold onto those moments just a little longer.

The Playground Years — Volume I

The first year of this annual series begins this spring.

Only a limited number of families will be photographed each year to keep the experience relaxed and personal.

If you’ve been wanting family photos that feel honest, playful, and full of life, this series was created for you.

Because the playground years may not last forever…

…but the memories can.
